They got an early start the next morning.

As the sun peeked over the horizon, the Jaeger squad left Camp Sinai behind for their first real run outside the wire since founding the settlement. At Clay’s request, Ella and Griff were taking the Roachmobile up to Malibu to ask the Brothers of the Dew for a favor before stopping off to grab the reluctantly offered supplies from PwnrBwner. Meanwhile Clay, Alex, Joe, Chonk, and Bacon Bits headed in the opposite direction.

The Grand Library was only a couple blocks over, but it was also damned close to the epicenter of the Merge. That meant it was a nasty couple blocks. Even the Sooq kept a tight caravan and battle wagons ready when they drove through. The Jaegers could have handled it at their levels, but to save time, energy, and healing, they all squeezed in and used the Camera Obscura.

“Gorgeous,” Joe said, snagging the insta-picture from the dirt where it had fallen.

Alex smirked. “You’re right, I’m going to look pretty flippin’ good in that one.” She ran her hand through the long blonde hair that had grown out over the past months. A far cry from her post-cancer bristle. “Waking up in the middle of the night to puke is playing hell with my REM cycles, but this bedhead is on point.”

“Not everything is about you, short stack. I’m talking beards.” Joe waved the picture at her. “Look at the magnificent face-manes this clan is sporting. I go without saying, but Clay’s working on a nice one, and Bacon Bits—” He nodded the Greater Blue Wyrm’s way. “Those chin-locks you’ve got going on are top shelf.”

“Yes, you are correct to notice it,” Bacon Bits said, preening. “A well-maintained beard is the pride of every Greater Wyrm.”

“I hate to break up all this self-congratulation on stuff that grows out of our faces with no input from us whatsoever,” Clay said, watching the twenty minutes of Obscurement tick down in the corner of his vision, “but we’re stealthing on a time limit here. Let’s get moving.” He glanced at the photo over his brother’s shoulder. “Also, Alex is the hottest one in the picture, hands down.”

She took one hand off her trusty Mossberg, raised it out to her side, and grinned at Joe with a smug, what’d-I-tell-you smile.

With the Obscurement running, the Jaeger squad was able to sneak past the feral monsters that roved the streets of LA. Which was just as well. Half of ’em were carrying cloth tote bags or baskets full of laundry and looked like they were out doing their daily errands. The others were feral and armed to the teeth. Literally, in the case of one weird centipede-like creature with eight pairs of arms instead of legs running from its tail to its maw full of hooked, gleaming fangs. That latter group seemed to have no interest other than looking for something to murder.

The shadow of the Grand Library met them while they were still halfway down the block. The place was a massive, looming monument to a fairy tale.
